Portland, Maine, is the city where Rachel Creed's frantic attempt to return home from Chicago after Gage's funeral is decisively blocked, marking the moment her journey shifts from air travel to a desperate, solitary drive through the night.

A Failed Connection

On the night of May 17, 1984, after burying her son, Rachel flies from Chicago to Boston, hoping to catch a connecting Delta flight to Portland and then on to Bangor. She arrives at Logan Airport's Delta terminal at 11:37 PM, but her flight to Portland, Flight 104, has already departed. The gate attendant informs her that the plane rolled out of the jetway at 11:40 PM, just three minutes before she reached the gate. Exhausted and frantic, she watches the 727 begin its takeoff roll from the window, realizing she has missed her only chance to fly the rest of the way.

A Warning Ignored

After missing her flight, Rachel rents a car at Logan and drives north. She reaches the Maine Turnpike and, around one in the morning, calls Jud Crandall from a rest area in Biddeford, still nearly fifty miles south of Portland. Jud, who has been watching for Louis, urges her to stop in Portland for the night. He tells her, "You drive on up to Portland and lay over... Check into a motel there and get some sleep," and insists that if something is happening in Ludlow, she would not want to be there anyway. Rachel initially agrees, but the pull of her fear is too strong. She passes the Portland exit, ignoring the green Holiday Inn sign, and continues north, driving straight through the night toward Ludlow.

A Point of No Return

Portland represents the last rational choice Rachel has to delay her arrival and potentially avoid the horror awaiting her. By bypassing the city, she commits herself to a non-stop drive that will bring her to Jud's house at dawn, where she will encounter the resurrected Gage. The city thus functions as a threshold she chooses to cross, a decision that seals her fate and leads directly to her death at the hands of her own son.
